VOICES FROM THE MERRY CEMETERY is a new suite for orchestra, choir and soloists composed by Shaun Davey to words from epitaph poems in the Merry Cemetery, Sapanta, Maramures. The tradition of brightly-painted wooden crosses in this churchyard, a stones’ throw from the Romanian border with Ukraine, is attributed to Stan Ioan Patras. Each cross carries a simple bas-relief illustration and short poem celebrating the life of the departed. The music was fostered by the Ireland Romania Cultural Foundation and conceived by Shaun Davey as a collaboration between the Mens’ choir of the Theology Faculty of Sibiu University, directed by Pr. Dr. Sorin Dobre, and a unique combination of Irish soloists and Romanian orchestral musicians. The first performance took place at the Sibiu International
Theatre Festival in June 2009 with support from Culture Ireland, followed
in August 2010 by a special perfomance in the Merry Cemetery itself, as
part of ‘The Long Road to Sapanta Festival’. Click Here for more details from RTE. Get Shaun Davey recordings online
