The Pilgrim
May We Never Have To Say Goodbye
In recent years Shaun Davey’s ‘The Deer’s Cry’ has struck a chord with the Christian community around the world. It has been sung and recited at a vast variety of ecumenical services.

The original old Irish text is also known as St. Patrick's Breastplate, which, for many centuries, has been used as a traveler’s prayer for protection. Indeed, in reciting, it very much gives the effect of putting on a suit of armour, piece by piece. With this musical setting the female solo vocalist, Rita Connolly, provides with the choir a spiritual tour-de-force in which the voice of the individual rings out in defiance against a world's danger, both natural and man-made.

“The Deer’s Cry” is featured on Shaun Davey’s epic work ‘The Pilgrim’.
The theme of this powerful suite is the spread of Celtic Christianity during the dark ages, a theme as Shaun says: "When people we today call saints, journeyed either as ordinary passengers from one Celtic region to another, or as voyagers into the unknown, they placed their fate in the hands of God". In stunning progression the recording of ‘The Pilgrim’ features musicians and instruments representative of the seven Celtic countries and regions - Wales, Scotland, Brittany, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Cornwall and Galicia, which are highlighted against the backdrop of a classical orchestra.

In recent years The Pilgrim has had a number of high profile performances including,
• Two performances at the Lorient Interceltique Festival,
• Two performances at Chicago’s Symphony Centre,
• A unique performance at Dublin’s Blanchardstown Centre
• The Irish College on The Isle of Skye, Scotland.

The Deer’s Cry: Prayer
I arise today
Through the strength of Heaven, Light of sun, Radiance of moon, Splendour of fire, Speed of lightning, Swiftness of wind, Depth of the sea, Stability of earth, Firmness of rock
I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me, God’s eye to look before me, God’s wisdom to guide me, God’s way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me
From all who shall wish me ill, Afar and a near, Alone and in a multitude, Against every cruel, Merciless power, That may oppose my body and soul
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ to shield me, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me
I arise today
